Today to most people, especially to those who are familiar with the long list of adventures you can do in Cebu, every time the term “whale shark watching” is mentioned people would think it is in Oslob, Cebu. Oslob has been very popular not just around the Philippines but even to most parts of the globe because of its gentle giants, whale sharks.
Oslob, Cebu, Philippines
Oslob, Cebu, Philippines is located in the southern part of Cebu province approximately 121 km from Cebu City. If taking a bus, it would take around 3 – 4 hours, renting tourist van or driving a private vehicle would just take 2 and half hours, depending on traffic. But leaving early from the city like around 4am or 3am, you can surely arrive there before the opening time which is 6am.
The encounter with the Gentle Giants, the Whale Shark of Oslob, Cebu
Before anyone will be allowed to swim with the whale sharks, they’ll have to register first and then briefed. Briefing will take just about 10 minutes or even less. Briefings will be about the “do’s and don’ts’ “ while swimming like you are not allowed to put on lotion, you should maintain at least 4 meters away from the whales, you should not touch the whales, no flashes from cameras and of course you are not allowed to feed them. These rules are very understandable since this is all for the protection of the whales. Once done with the briefing, people from the tourism will assign you a boat and of course with boatmen then take you to the actual area where the whale sharks are being fed. The maximum allowed time to swim with the whale sharks is only 30 minutes to give way to other tourists as they’ll have to let the whale sharks rest after 12NN. There are some cases though that they have extended up to 2PM but during these cases, there are a lot of guests and they have stopped for few minutes or hours between 6am – 12nn due to big waves. I haven’t heard a case when they extended the time just because of the number of guests. So it would be safe if you’ll go there early. And, if you are doing other adventures outside Oslob, like kawasan falls, canyoneering, Moalboal Island hopping or chasing waterfalls, I would recommend doing the whale shark watching first before any other adventures.
The side trip to Sumilon Island Sandbar and Sanctuary
After the whale shark watching, most guests proceed to Sumilon Island. Sumilon Island is just a few minutes away from the whale shark area via a motorized boat. If you’ll intend to do a full oslob tour, you can spend 4 hours at most at the island be it just in the sandbar and sanctuary or even if you include day use of sumilon blue waters resort at the island so we can move on to tumalog falls.
The Tumalog Falls in Oslob, Cebu
Prior to getting to tumalog falls, I would recommend stopping by again at the whale shark watching area for lunch. After lunch, you may proceed to tumalog falls. It will be just a 15-minute drive from the whale shark watching area. To know more about getting to tumalog falls, please click here.
